The inner structure of organizations and its application to goal-directedness in general systems

Dr. Tomas Veloz
(Center LEO APOSTEL, Brüssel, Belgium)

The theory of chemical organizations identifies the parts of a reaction network that are closed and self-maintaining, and thus entail a model of “system” in the sense that it obtains all possible structures that can possibly be observed as dynamical units (systems) in a larger timescale than the timescale at which the reactions occur. There are multiple structural properties that can be identified at the internal structure of the organization. In this seminar we will explain how such features can be harnessed to better understand the impact of structural perturbations, i.e. addition or elimination of species and reactions, in the organizational structure, and how such impact analysis can be used to formalize notions such as resilience and goal-directedness.
